2010-08-29 16:40:08 Results / Kidderminster Shuttle
Hi All,
Just a quick note to say that Martin Davies will be taking on reporting the clubs activities to the Kidderminster Shuttle from now on.
Please E-Mail him direct on designsevern(at)hotmail(dot)com post a message on the AFRC Facebook page, or drop him a message on Facebook.
Martin doesn't have the time to chase you for results, nor trawl the internet for them, so please make sure you give him as much detail as possible, including a race report, photos, organisers website if possible. So the emphasis is on you to let him know where you've been racing.
You will also still need to inform Richard Baker of you race presence for inclusion on the AFRC Website.
Cheers

Wyre Forest Half
Sunday July the 11th see's the clubs seconds race promotion of the year, the 10th Wyre Forest Half from the visitor centre at Callow Hill. Billed as one of the best races in the midlands, our reputation is made on excellent marshalling, wonderful sunshine and superb atmosphere.
It is no mean feet (no pun intended) that our race reputation is down to the club members who give up there free time to help marshal, time keep and give out the goodie bags to all the finishers. The race obviously takes masses of people to look after everything that requires doing.
Would all members please reply to me as soon as possible confirming their attendance and if they are able to bring any family or friends to help out on the day, and if you have any special requirements / wishes for specific jobs.
As in previous years, there will be a light buffet at the Duke William after the race for all helpers as a little token of thanks for everybody's efforts on the day.
Please confirm if you wish to join us afterwards, so we can make sure there is enough food.
It would be kind if you could also confirm if you are unable to attend also.
It's then 10th running of the event, so please try and help make this the best one yet!
Happy Running

MTB Weekend
Anyone interested in a mountainbiking trip to ride the Skyline trail at Afan Forest Park, near Port Talbot? An epic day out: 46km, 2000m climbing, right up into the hills.
www.mbwales.com/en/content/cms/Centres/Afan_Forest_Park/Skyline/Skyline.aspx
I'm going with a mate on Sat 3rd July (or possibly 10th), probably camp somewhere for another day's riding on Sunday. A couple of spaces in the car. { phil }
2010-06-03 10:29:57
Hi Phil,
I'd love to come along, I've been to Afan a few times and loved each time I've been there. However, I shall be drinking all day in Church Stretton on the 3rd/4th, and the 10th is the day before our half marathon ...
After speaking with Dean last night, maybe we could organise another visit later in the year?

Are there any Friday night runs planned? { Louise Massey }
2010-05-14 07:03:37 Replies:
Hi Louise,
I'm sure Craig will be along to confirm shortly, but the current plan is there will be no regular 'plan' of runs. Craig is going to put a list of dates together when he is going to commit to running, and where and this will make up the run plan.
Obviously if anybody else wants to 'guest' a run, then they are more than welcome, and should post the details here, and also E-Mail Richard Baker for them to be put on the club website.

Runaround Whyre Forest 8.5
With less than a month to go and it is that time where we ask for your help to promote arguably one of the best races in the world (ok I might be over exaggerating, but it is a damn fine race.)
There are plenty of jobs from marshalling, finish funnel, goody bag fillers, drink station to cover.
Could I ask that those who are able to attend let me know by either E-Mail or down the club when you see me, so we can start to compile a list of attendees, it would be appreciated if you could let me now if you CAN'T make it too.

Just for those who are after a weather check. The race is still on, I am going to the forest in the morning to run the half course. The snow fall isn't that bad in Kidderminster, but that's not to say it won't be worse or better in the forest tomorrow.
I will, of course, update you all tomorrow should there be any change. Meanwhile, if you speak to any athletes that ave entered and ask if the race is on, please tell them it is!

Hello,
Firstly thank you to all the runners who braved the snow for what was possibly the most scenic Wyre Forest 8 runs ever? Certainly since I have been a member of the club. It was a tough battle at the front of the field, and a good mix of abilities throughout the field.
Thank you to everybody who came and helped, sorry I didn't get round to thank you all individually, but I'm sure you are aware how grateful the club is for your continued support and help.
Thank you also to the Red Cross for turning out in force to once again provide two points of contact on the course for anybody suffering an injury. I believe they only had a couple of people at the finish to deal with.
The half marathon will be taking place on Sunday 11th July, so if I could ask you to pencil that in your diaries as we require even more help than the 8.5 mile race.
I will be in contact about the Half later in the year, once every thing is set in stone.

JW Ultra
Entries to the full race will be available from
www.ultrarunner.co.uk from the 1st February, they will be online only, so no paperwork involved.
The race organiser has said that if we wish to enter any relay teams, we can do, we just need to book the places and pay the entry fee of £45 and let them know the actual teams the week beforehand (we have previously submitted teams then had to change them for various reasons.)
As soon as I have the relay entry form, I will let you all know, but if you can sort your teams out between you, as I intend to take up my 30mile place { Simon }
2010-01-16 18:08:52
I'm also in for the solo 30 mile event, having deferred from 2009. Those who took part in this in 2008 and 2009 would all vouch for the fact that it's a great day out, so I'd echo Simon's suggestion to put a team in, even if you're only 80% certain at this stage, as you can change runners at the last minute.

May Hill Massarce
Is anyone else doing this race on sunday ? If anyone has done it before, any tips ? I know the race is full. { Sarah A }
2010-02-02 15:15:24 Replies:
Sarah, not doing it this year, but these were my notes from last year. It's 8.46 miles and, adjusting for your pace versus mine, you should expect to average about 8'45" minutes per mile, i.e. plenty of mud and hills. In view or recent weather I'd suggest Mudclaws or similar this year, despite comment below. Comment about parking means you should ignore directions to designated place and drive right to the start area, where you'll find parking in a lumber yard just before and to the left.
"1 degree but felt colder with wind chill, snow flurries. First
0.3m downhill tarmac then uphill, mainly good tracks to top of
May Hill at 2.3m. Mostly downhill from there apart from tough
hill at about 6.5m. Some flat and uphill sections of deep mud
but nowhere near as muddy as had expected. Fell shoes were
OK but trail shoes be fine most years I think. Final couple of
miles retraces start so last 0.3m is uphill tarmac. Most had to
park miles away, so aim for lumber yard on left just before the
start/finish."
Who needs 118!

2010-02-02 19:51:13
It was a good race, very tough in places but too many steep downhills for me! I managed it in 72 mins last year. DON'T GO OFF TOO FAST - its a fast start but then you hit a very long climb so save your energy to get up that! Good luck and see you at the last XC next weekend?

Yeah, like most yesterday I wondered how the X-country would go ahead. My run in the end was a chance of a much needed training session and the for club pride. Having been one of the five who failed to complete a team last year in this event it was good to see us finish with 6 counters, especially when other local clubs failed to do so. What we sometimes lack in numbers we more than make up for in spirit.

Wrekin Wrecker
As some of you have shown an interest in this years Wrekin Wrecker I thought I'd post some info. The race is this Sunday 22/11 registration is Bucktree Hall Hotel in Wellington,Telford (GR 640 098 ) with the start 0.6 miles away (GR 633093 ) east of Wrekin Farm. Registration costs £5 on the day and the race start time is 11:00 am. Although a fell race, map and compass are not required with the course being marked and marshalled. However the organisers may insist on you carrying a waterproof jackect of some description ( pac-lite type is usual )and I would recommend wearing your trainers with the greatest grip, especially following the recent rain.
For anyone thinking of running this years Mortimer Forest race this would make a great training run.

2009-11-06 14:05:21 Forest Run Sunday 1/11/2009
For anyone who's interested I'll be going on about a 10 mile forest run this Sunday meeting at the visitor centre at 10:00 am. The ladies are also taking a slower group out also ( not sure on their distance ) at 10:00 am. Dean's said he's joining me, anyone else fancy a steady paced jaunt over some of the quieter trails of the forest why not join us.
( Trail shoes recomended as there maybe some mud ! )
Cheers Craig L { Craig Lewis }

The ladies are also planning to do around 10 miles - maybe a bit more if we are feeling really energetic at the 6 mile stage!

Well done yesterday to all the Feet who ran and supported (18 in total). Had it not been for illness and injury this figure would've been closer to 25.Thanks to Ian for setting up base camp Amazing Feet and also Louise for some tasty cakes. For a club with 70 members it was a great team effort and hopefully one to build on.

Just noticed on b'ham xcountry website, on the preliminary league results they have missed you out craig. Also on individual results your position states Number not declared Amazing feet ? ..... lets hope they sort it out
[ Steve ] ---

I've already raised a query with the league. Craig was indeed our third home in 44th position, so hopefully they'll correct that when the final results are published. Either way we'd still be in 9th position at this early stage, but the few points saved could be important at the end of the season.

Breidden Hills Fell Race
Hi All
I know many of you were out running this weekend , but I thought you might like to hear of my run today. The race starts and finishes at Criggion village hall, just over the welsh border about an 1 1/2 hour journey from Kidderminster. The race is 7 miles long with 2300 feet of ascent,although a fell race this race is very acheviable for most runners. The 2300 feet of ascent is gained over 4 climbs the final one of which takes you up onto Breidden Hill and the monument Rodney's pillar. Then it's a mad dash down for the final mile. I'm not sure whether it's the scenery,course,free soup and samosa's or the relaxed atmosphere, that make the Breidden Hills fell race a real gem. Results below

Sports Injury and Physiotherapy Discount
I have been offered a club discount for Physiotherapy and Sports Injury at a practice in Kidderminster.
The offer is £30 per session instead of £36 for half an hour session. The Physio you need to book with is Katie Locker, make sure you mention my name when booking, and also take with you your English Athletics Club Membership card.
Tel No 01562 67129
They also have a practice in Halesowen, which I'm unsure if Katie Locker works there too, but I will find this out tomorrow (Friday) when I go for my second appointment.
The details should also appear on the website soon. { Simon Gregg }

Wyre Forest Half
I'd just like to say thank you to all the club members who turned up today to help with another successful Half Marathon. We couldn't have done it without you.
Thanks to Craig & Sarah (Happy Birthday Craig) for all the behind the scenes work they do let alone everything on the day. Jane and David, again for all the behind the scenes work they do and David for last man duties.
Mostly I'd like to thank Colin Downey of DK who has no connection to the club other than being a genuinely friendly gent who a few of us know through races we have done, and also some close battles I have especially had with him. He has given up his own time to come and help our club. So thank you very much Colin.
Once again a massive thanks to you all for your hard work today, and I apologise for those that were left on the course for a long time, after an over site on the fuel gauge I was somewhat chasing my tail trying to catch up with everything, also the nature of the course doesn't help.
I suppose I should also thank my Dad for taking marshals on the course for me to save me a long journey back to the visitors centre, and also collecting so course markers in. Also, for the team of Red Cross volunteers for giving up there free time to provide First Aid Cover.
Lastly, (I won't bore you all any more after this) to the Forestry Commission, Go Ape, and the Duke William for their hospitality over the weekend. { Simon }

Sweatshop Wyre Forest Half Marathon
Hi Everybody,
Sunday July 12th see's the 9th running of the clubs second race promotion. Entries are coming in at a good rate, which I believe are currently at a higher level that previous years, this could be our best entry to date.
This race cannot run without the generous help we have received in past years from the club membership, friends and family, and this year is no different, especially as membership is not at the same level of previous years.
Therefore, could I ask that all club members confirm if they are able to attend the day (or not) so we can start a marshal list, and if you want to marshal at a certain point / need to get away early etc.
If you can let Richard Baker know of your intention to attend, or any other committee member, and if you are able to bring any friends or family.
Jane is trying to arrange some food at the pub over the road for after the race, so with the weather the way it is should make for a good social afterwards. { Simon }

Hi Everyone
First of all thanks Si for this posting. Thanks also to those who have said either way whether they can help or not at this years race. With 13 miles of course to cover ,3 drinks stations and start/finish duties we really do need as much help as possible.
Entries now stand at 138 as of today and if I'm honest I'm not sure if thats up or down on last year, but I think with the time left to go were looking at the 300+ mark again.
We've had entries from London,Liverpool and Suffolk as well as many of the local clubs ,so you can see I think that a multi terrain event over this distance is something unique at this time of year and definately something worth preserving.
After this years race there will be, in the way of a thank you to all those who marshaled a gathering over at the Duke William with the club funding some kind of eats.
As well as the 9th Wyre Forest Half it will also be my 42nd birthday ( I know I look much younger ) so forget the pressie/card and come and marshal instead !
Cheers Craig

Just a quick note to say if anybody else wishes to marshal then they are more than welcome. Also, if members could arrive at the forest for 9am so we can get you out to your marshalling points. I'd advise a water proof (forecast showers) and possibly a drink as you may be out for a few hours.
Thanks for all your offers of assistance.

On this Wednesday I'm proposing a longish run about 9 miles in length starting off at 19:00 and will go through Hucott woods across farmland to Cookley before returning through Broadwaters a run we have done before if your interested let me tomorrow or reply on here.
Cheers { Craig L }

Lots of Numbers Available
I broke my left leg yesterday and so will be out of action for a while. I've entered a variety of races over the coming months, so if anyone wants a number for the following events, free of charge, call me on 07920817087.
- Birmingham & Black Country Half, Saturday 4 July (morning)
- Stratford Summer Six, Saturday 4 July (evening)
- Tenbury 10k, Sunday 2 August (morning)
There'll be more to come, but I'll wait until I know more about my likely recovery period before giving up on events in September and beyond.

2009-06-24 17:12:34 Long Training Runs
There's been a bit of interest over the last couple of weeks to add some longer training runs to our schedule. There's likely to be one next wednesday starting at the Glades at the slightly earlier start of 19:00. The distance will be around 10 miles . If your thinking of coming along you may want to consider carrying some fluid, especially if it's warm. Conformation of this will follow in the next couple of days.
Something that will be going ahead on Friday the 3rd of July is a training recce over the half course. This will coicide with the regular Friday run from Wyre Forest that night. Again this will set off earlier at 19:00 and as before I advise taking some fluid with you. It will be run at a leisurely pace and allow us to see what kind of condtion the course is in the week before the race.
Anyone with any queries over ethier of these runs should either post on here or e-mail me direct at somemonkeys@btinternet.com.
Cheers Craig { Craig L }

I am more than happy to take a guest run if anybody wants to come over to Evesham and run up on Bredon hill, I know it's a bit far out for most people but it would be a different run and if eveyone wants we can find a pub after for a cool down drink. I'm off to work this afternoon and will not be back till Thursday morning so if anybody is interested I will get back to them on Thursday

I've got a good run I do occasionally round Bodenham/Shatterford which might be suitable for one of these? I usually park at grid ref SO815802 (Sladd lane, nr Drakelow). Measured today as 6.12 miles but beware it's HILLY! Pretty muddy in places (after 2 days of rain) and 1 field of long grass this year, but mercifully clear of stinging nettles!
Only thing is I'm not sure of a pub, but noticed there's one signposted off the road junction nearby.

Hi Phil,
We usually run from the layby at Kingsford Country Park, perhaps you could do your run on one of these nights? We always enjoy a change from the norm.

Hi Phil
I'm ok for this friday. How far are the 2 options?
[ Sarah L ] ---
2009-06-21 22:49:45
6.12 miles if parking on Sladd Lane, as would be best. 7.5-8 miles if having to park at the alternative location.
[ Phil ] ---
2009-06-22 11:07:16
Let's go for the Sladd Lane option then and see who else is interested at club this week

Yes , another great Bolt race with a healthy sprinkling of Feet. Although on Friday morning a stiff knee nearly kept me from running it. The course changed again this time missing out the return route around the horse paddock. The knee held up ok and I was able to complete what is probably my closest and one of my favorite races. It was good to stay after and sample the burgers and beer tent ( the beer got cheaper as the evening went on ). The night ended with the now traditional chinese flying lanterns and those of us still left at 22:20 made our way back to the station. Not sure if it was tiredness or the effects of the alcohol but we all thought( whilst standing on the platform ) we saw the figure of Nick Hyde running over the level-crossing.
See you soon.
Craig

Is that "the beer *seemed* cheaper as the evening went on"!!? Shame couldn't stay, I felt really rough all evening, I'm sure beer and burgers would have helped. Good race though.

Glad you all had a good time. It was a shame I couldn't make it, I've had a bit of a hectic week at work and was shattered, so stayed home and had an early night.
Once I get this week out the way, I should be back to training as normal.

2009-06-18 00:14:10 Hash details
I'm setting it with Rachel -it really is such a good way of getting to know new footpaths/routes and you can choose to run up front /do intervals sprinting back + forwards or stay at the back for recovery run or just go at own pace -- so no excuses.!
Rachel ,what time do you want to meet to set it ? Shall I get to you ? mob is 07967121281. Thought approx 10 am would be good . { Rachel Ward }
2009-06-17 09:04:11 Hash next Thursday, 18th
I'm setting a hash around Bewdley next Thursday. It starts and finishes at the Woodcolliers Arms on Welch Gate followed by refreshment and nourishment at the pub. The route is 3-4 miles and takes the form of hare and hounds, where runners work as a team to deduce the correct route by following clues. (Its a treasure hunt for grown ups really)
All new comers welcome and you wont be left behind!
Check out Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers for more info.
Hope to see some of you there.
